Wooden dowel pins and screw eye hooks

Wooden dowel pins and screw eye hooks

Two small-hardware cases for the wood side of the bench: fluted hardwood dowel pins in three diameters for glued joints, and nickel-plated screw eyes from 3/4 to 1-3/4 inch for frames, hooks and holiday wire.

Dowels for the joint, screw eyes for the hook

Wooden dowel pins are the oldest joint in furniture and still the cleanest. Our 250-piece kit carries fluted hardwood dowels cut from straight rods in 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 inch diameters across eight lengths; the flutes carry glue along the pin and let trapped air out, and the tapered ends find the hole, so a shelf, a cabinet side or a chair rail pulls tight without splitting. A dense hardwood dowel holds a joint the way a birch dowel from the lumber aisle does, with a smooth surface that needs no sanding, and each size lives in a labeled compartment, which matters when the 5/16 and 3/8 look alike from across the shop. They fit the same way in furniture builds, toy models and craft projects, and the small sizes double as plugs for screw holes.

Screw eyes are the other kit. Nine sizes from 0.75 to 1.75 inch in length, zinc and nickel plated metal against rust, with a sharp tip that starts in soft wood or a pegboard by hand. They hang picture wire, key boards, ornament hooks, string lights and the guy lines on a Christmas tree stand, and the divider case keeps the count honest after the holidays.

Questions about dowel pins & screw eyes

What are wooden dowel pins used for?

Aligning and strengthening glued joints in furniture, cabinets, shelves and craft builds: drill matching holes in both parts, add glue, insert the fluted dowel and clamp. They also serve as plugs and pegs in toys and models.

Do I need glue with dowel pins?

Yes, for a structural joint. Spread wood glue in both holes, insert the fluted dowel and clamp. The flutes let glue reach the full length of the pin for strength.

How much weight can a screw eye hook hold?

In solid wood a 1-inch screw eye from this kit carries a framed picture, a key board or a string of lights comfortably; for anything heavy, use the longest eye the board allows and drive it into a stud.

Will the screw eyes rust outdoors?

The nickel plating resists oxidation and water for balcony hooks and string lights. For salt air or permanent immersion choose a stainless fastener instead.
