Threaded Inserts
191-Piece Threaded Insert Kit for Wood, 10 Sizes
191 pieces · White zinc plated carbon steel

Knurled steel threaded inserts give pine, plywood, MDF and particle board a permanent, reusable metal thread for furniture bolts. The brass heat-set tips do the same job in 3D-printed plastic from a soldering iron. Each kit ships with the wrench or adapter its installation needs.

A threaded insert is a short steel sleeve with a coarse external knurl on the outside and a machine thread inside. Drill a blind hole, drive the insert with a hex wrench until it sits flush, and the hole now takes a 1/4-20, 5/16-18 or 3/8-16 bolt as many times as you like: a reusable mounting point instead of a wood screw that strips a little more with every assembly. It is the right repair for a chair that wobbles, table legs that loosen, a bed rail that has been taken apart too often, and for any softwood, plywood or MDF board where a screw has stripped. No tap and no epoxy are needed; the knurl cuts its own seat.
Our inserts are zinc-plated carbon steel, a material that does not rust inside the furniture and shrugs off vibration, and the kits add what the hole needs next: matching bolts in two lengths, hex nuts or both, and the hex wrenches to drive them. The 191-piece kit covers ten sizes across three threads; the 120-piece 1/4-20 kit is sixty complete sets for a run of chairs, cabinets or speaker boxes. Applications run from woodworking jigs and knock-down furniture to attaching legs, brackets and hardware anywhere a project will be assembled more than once.
For plastic we make a different tool. Heat-set inserts melt into a 3D-printed boss, and the brass tips in our kit, M2 to M8 on a long adapter, fit a standard soldering iron so the insert goes in straight without the hot shaft touching the part.
Drill to the insert core, not the knurl. Softwood, plywood and MDF take the smaller size; oak, maple and other hardwoods take the larger.
| Thread | Softwood / plywood / MDF | Hardwood | Insert lengths in our kits | Bolt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/4-20 | 9.5 mm (3/8") | 10 mm | 10, 15, 20, 25 mm | 1/4-20 |
| 5/16-18 | 11 mm (7/16") | 11.5 mm | 13, 15, 20, 25 mm | 5/16-18 |
| 3/8-16 | 12.5 mm (1/2") | 13 mm | 20, 25 mm | 3/8-16 |
Test in scrap first; a hole 0.5 mm too small splits softwood, 0.5 mm too large lets the knurl spin in hardwood.
For the brass tips kit. Hole sizes are typical for standard knurled heat-set inserts; check the outer diameter of the insert you print for.
| Insert | Hole in the print | Depth | PLA / PETG | ABS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M2 | 3.2 mm | insert + 1 mm | 200–220 °C | 240 °C |
| M2.5 | 3.6 mm | insert + 1 mm | 200–220 °C | 240 °C |
| M3 | 4.0 mm | insert + 1 mm | 200–220 °C | 240 °C |
| M4 | 5.6 mm | insert + 1 mm | 200–220 °C | 240 °C |
| M5 | 6.4 mm | insert + 1.5 mm | 210–220 °C | 240 °C |
| M6 | 8.0 mm | insert + 1.5 mm | 210–220 °C | 245 °C |
| M8 | 10.0 mm | insert + 2 mm | 210–220 °C | 245 °C |
Keep at least 2 mm of wall around the hole and print the boss solid.
For softwood, plywood and MDF a knurled or coarse-thread steel insert driven with a hex wrench holds best, which is what our kits carry. In dense hardwood drill the pilot a fraction larger and drive slowly so the knurl cuts instead of splitting the board.
Yes. Plywood and particle board are where inserts help most, because wood screws strip in them quickly. Keep the insert at least one diameter from an edge and use the bolt length that stops short of the far face.
Wood inserts, threaded wood inserts, insert nuts or knock-down furniture inserts; the hex-drive type we sell is sometimes called an E-Z style insert. They all mean a steel sleeve with external knurl and internal machine thread.
Match the drill to the insert's outer core, not its knurl: about 9.5 mm for 1/4-20, 11 mm for 5/16-18 and 12.5 mm for 3/8-16 in softwood, slightly larger in hardwood. Test in scrap first.
Send us the machine or the fixture and we will name the compartment.
