Set screw assortments in stainless steel and alloy, metric and SAE

Hex-socket cup-point set screws in 304 stainless steel or black 12.9 alloy steel, 12 to 25 sizes per box, every size sealed in its own labeled bag with the hex keys to drive it. The one that fell out of the faucet handle is in here.

Stainless steel set screws, bagged by size

A set screw is the small headless grub screw that locks a knob, lever, collar or pulley to its shaft. It is also the fastener most likely to vanish, because it sits flush and nobody notices it backing out until the handle spins. Our set screw assortments exist for that moment: 101, 400, 485 or 500 screws, metric from M3 to M8 and, in the 25-size kits, SAE from 1/8-40 to 5/16-18, each size in a sealed bag inside a divider container.

We cut and polish the hex socket so a key seats fully and does not round over the way a Phillips or slotted head does, and we finish the cup point clean so it bites the metal shaft without burrs. The stainless steel kits are 304 for bathrooms, boats and kitchens; the black kits are 12.9 alloy steel under zinc plating for door hardware, electronics and machinery.

Five hex keys sized to the kit and a pair of tweezers come in the box, so the repair of a door lever, a towel bar, a stand mixer or a camera rig starts the moment the lid opens.

Questions about set screws

Metric or SAE for my door handle?

Measure the old screw if you have it. Most domestic levers use SAE threads between 1/8-40 and 1/4-20; imported fixtures and appliances use M3 to M6. The 400- and 500-piece assortments carry both, so one box covers the whole house.

What is a cup point?

A slight hollow at the tip that leaves a ring of contact on the shaft. It grips harder than a flat point and marks the metal less than a cone point, which is why it is the standard for knobs, collars and handles.

Will stainless steel set screws rust?

304 stainless steel resists rust indoors and in most outdoor and bathroom use without any coating. The black 12.9 kits are zinc plated and stay clean in dry locations.
